Our Story

Rooted in the heritage of the Gránufélagshús — where Akureyri's trading history meets modern Icelandic hospitality

The Gránufélag Heritage

The story of the historic trading houses — a cornerstone of Akureyri since 1870

The Gránufélag houses in downtown Akureyri carry a rich history of trade, fishing, and community development along Eyjafjörður. They are named after Gránufélagið, a trading company founded in 1870 by Tryggvi Gunnarsson and several other entrepreneurs. The company quickly became one of the most influential trading and fishing enterprises in northern Iceland.

On this very site, Gránufélagið built its principal buildings — warehouses, offices, and later a general store. The houses were constructed from timber with distinctive Danish influences in their form and building techniques. They stand today as living monuments to a transformative era, when Akureyri grew from a small village into a thriving town.

Gránufélagið operated both a trading business and a fishing fleet, owning ships and running fish processing and salt-fish exports. Its influence was felt throughout the region — the company was a cornerstone of the local economy well into the 20th century. Operations ceased in 1919, but the buildings still stand as a reminder of the golden age of Icelandic commerce and pioneering enterprise.

Today the Gránufélag houses are protected heritage buildings, home to a variety of cultural and hospitality services including restaurants, galleries, and exhibitions. They are a treasured part of Akureyri's cultural heritage, offering guests a window into the life and industry of centuries past.
